First Grade Connects Theodore Roosevelt and the Teddy Bear - Pictures
October 2011

The first graders celebrated Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday and the birth of the Teddy Bear during the month of October. Each student brought a teddy bear to school and soon discovered how the teddy bear came to be. Our students made the connection between Theodore Roosevelt and the teddy bear, while also creating a bond with their bears. These teddy bears traveled to the students’ classes and participated in different activities. Some of these activities included: measuring and graphing the heights of their bears, and comparing the results. The students made panda bear faces and learned about different types of bear. Next the students were challenged to draw and color bears to look like their own.

The first grade students created a bond with their teddy bears, but they had to say goodbye. The bears spent the night at school. The next morning the students entered their classrooms and realized the bears had a very exciting sleepover party. They saw all the interesting and funny things the bears did the night before. Finally, the first graders wrote a story about the teddy bear sleepover and how the bears ate popcorn and watched a movie. Fun times were had by all!
