St. Christina will again run a night at the Southwest Chicago Pads shelter this year. We have been assigned to the first Saturday evening for six months each year (November through April). We have two wonderful teams of people set to go and are looking for a few more.
Team A = November 1st, January 3rd, March 7th
and
Team B = December 6th, February 7th, April 4th
We are there from 5 pm until approximately 8 pm,
with different groups from the parish coming and going to help.
Southwest Chicago PADS provides emergency services, food, clothing, and referrals for additional assistance to persons who are homeless. It is a very worthwhile cause. Each team is divided into two crews: the cooking crew and the clothing ministry. If you choose to become a member of one of the teams this year, give some thought as to which crew you would like to work on. The cooking crew brings, prepares, and serves the dinner. They generally arrive at 5:30 pm and are finished by 7:30 pm. The clothing crew arrives at 5:45 pm and are finished by 8 pm. Either crew is welcome to stay and visit with the guests until closing. The shelter closes for the night at 8 pm. The shelter is located at 3121 W. 71st, Chicago, IL - a few blocks east of Kedzie.
We are also in need of someone to accompany us each night and be there as security, helping to see that our volunteers get to their cars, etc. If you can take a night or two please let us know.
Please give some thought into making a commitment and joining one of these teams. You may find that you get more out of it than you give. The teams are made up of people from St. Christina. If you are interested, please call Deacon Stan or Sue Rakauskas at 773-239-7209.
